Featured Artist at the 25th Annual MAAFA Exhibition: Homecoming at Ashé Cultural Arts Center

My work is featured at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s 25th Annual MAAFA Exhibition—Homecoming: La Porte du Retour (The Door of Return).

MAAFA, Kiswahili for “great disaster,” is a global remembrance of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its ongoing impact. But this year’s theme: The Door of Return, transforms the narrative from loss to reclamation, inviting us to bring our ancestors home, honor their stories, and reclaim our legacy.

For me, this was personal. What started as a birthday self-portrait became a deeper act of documenting memory, honoring my mother, my grandmothers, and the generations before them. Through my art, I open the “door” for them, carrying them with me into the present.

To exhibit alongside Grand Griots, master artists, and elders who keep these stories alive is both an honor and a responsibility.
Each work documents remembrance, honors survival, and brings our stories into view.

This exhibition stands as a testament to restoration, reconnection, and collective renewal.
I invite you to experience the work in person at Ashé Cultural Arts Center, on view through October 1, 2025.
