Behind the Lens: Documenting the Vacation Plantation Film Screening
Earlier this month, I had the honor of documenting a powerful evening in New Orleans, the screening of Vacation Plantation, a documentary by filmmakers Alex Bezeau and Lauren Cudmore (@bluelobstertales), held at The Broadside.
This thought-provoking film dives deep into the complexities of plantation tourism and the stories often left out of public view. The screening was followed by a community-centered panel that brought both urgency and reflection to the conversation.
Who Was in the Room
The event was organized by @thedescendantsproject, a local organization led by Jo Banner, and sponsored by @midlocenter, both of whom are at the forefront of truth-telling and historical justice in the South.
The post-film panel featured:
Jo Banner of The Descendants Project @thedescendantsproject
Dr. Ashley Rogers of Whitney Plantation @whitneyplantation
Joseph McGill of The Slave Dwelling Project @slavedwellingproject
Each panelist brought raw truth and emotional clarity to the conversation. The audience was fully engaged, some with emotion in their faces, others asking deep, necessary questions. It was a packed house, but more importantly, it was a house ready to listen.
My Role & Reflection
As a documentary and event photographer, capturing this night was a responsibility. Every frame carried weight. The expressions, the pauses, the silent head nods, all told their own story.
I’m incredibly grateful to have been trusted with that lens.
With Gratitude
Special thanks to the entire Vacation Plantation team, the organizers, panelists, and every person in the room who showed up not just to watch, but to witness.
To Lauren and Alex, thank you for allowing SAP to contribute to your vision. And to anyone reading: this film is available for educational licenses and future screenings. Reach out to Lauren@BlueLobsterTales.com for more information.

Demario Davis: Leading on and off the field: Capturing the Devoted Dreamers spring enrichment program
Go behind the scenes with New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis and the Devoted Dreamers Foundation as they empower local youth through mentorship, education, and community partnerships.
This spring, we had the privilege of documenting the work of Devoted Dreamers, a nonprofit founded by Demario Davis and his wife, Tamela Davis. While Demario is making headlines this week for his leadership and performance with the Saints, his impact off the field is equally inspiring.
Through Devoted Dreamers’ Spring enrichment program , youth in New Orleans gain mentorship, education, and real-world skills that extend far beyond sports. Supported by partners like Ochsner and OnPath Federal Credit Union, the program introduced students to health, wellness, and financial literacy, providing tools for success both now and in the future.
Sorena A Photography specialize in capturing moments where influence meets community impact. From classroom discussions to hands-on learning activities, every image from this program reflects the dedication, mentorship, and hope that fuel change in our city.
While Davis may be trending for his achievements on the field, it’s these behind-the-scenes commitments to the next generation that tell the deeper story.

Documenting Black Excellence at Essence 2025: Glambitious Brunch. Featured in Upscale Magazine.
This summer, Sorena A. Photography had the privilege of partnering once again with visionary entrepreneur Lillie Mae, founder of the Glambitious brand, to document her sold-out Glambitious Brunch during Essence Festival 2025.
Held in the heart of New Orleans, this unforgettable event brought together a dynamic group of women entrepreneurs, speakers, and influencers, all drawn to Lillie Mae’s powerful message of faith, strategy, and visibility.
As the creative partner and photographer for the brunch, our focus was on telling the story of the day through thoughtful, authentic imagery. From candid moments of connection to the energy of the speaker panels and the elegance of the all-white theme, every frame was designed to capture the spirit of empowerment that filled the room.
This feature in Upscale Magazine’s online story on Lillie Mae and the Glambitious Brunch is one of many highlights in a long-standing commitment to celebrating stories of excellence and impact. Upscale, a national publication based in Atlanta, has long been dedicated to showcasing Black culture, entrepreneurship, and achievement, making this collaboration a natural fit.

Featured Artist at the 25th Annual MAAFA Exhibition: Homecoming at Ashé Cultural Arts Center
My work is featured at the Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s 25th Annual MAAFA Exhibition—Homecoming: La Porte du Retour (The Door of Return).
MAAFA, Kiswahili for “great disaster,” is a global remembrance of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its ongoing impact. But this year’s theme: The Door of Return, transforms the narrative from loss to reclamation, inviting us to bring our ancestors home, honor their stories, and reclaim our legacy.
For me, this was personal. What started as a birthday self-portrait became a deeper act of documenting memory, honoring my mother, my grandmothers, and the generations before them. Through my art, I open the “door” for them, carrying them with me into the present.
To exhibit alongside Grand Griots, master artists, and elders who keep these stories alive is both an honor and a responsibility.
Each work documents remembrance, honors survival, and brings our stories into view.
This exhibition stands as a testament to restoration, reconnection, and collective renewal.
I invite you to experience the work in person at Ashé Cultural Arts Center, on view through October 1, 2025.
Delta Sigma Theta: 30th Deltaversary Weekend in New Orleans
Recently, we had the opportunity to document a milestone celebration for a remarkable group of women: the 30th Deltaversary of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. This group of sisters flew into New Orleans to reconnect, reflect on their shared history, and create new memories together. From the moment they arrived, the energy was undeniable, bold, joyful, and deeply connected. Their weekend began with a lively welcome hour at The Troubadour Hotel, setting the tone for what would be a nonstop celebration of sisterhood. The next day, the group photo session at City Park brought out genuine laughter and a sense of pride, with each member dressed in signature white or Delta red, against the backdrop of oak trees and New Orleans natural beauty.
Creative activities followed, including a hands-on session at The Bead Shop, where the women crafted unique keepsakes and swapped stories. Their itinerary wrapped up with a private dinner at Copper Vine Restaurant, where the table was filled with good food, even better conversation, and plenty of champagne toasts.
The event was thoroughly documented, highlighting classic sisterhood poses, candid laughter, and moments of reflection. Even after thirty years, this group continues to celebrate their shared legacy and embody genuine community.
Congratulations to this Delta Sigma Theta line on their 30th Deltaversary. Here’s to many more years of friendship, impact, and unforgettable moments in New Orleans.
When Love Writes Its Own Rules: Tyra & Ken’s two day Celebration 🎉
Some weddings break the mold and Tyra and Ken’s celebration was one I’ll never forget. Over two unforgettable days, they honored their union in ways that were uniquely their own, blending the spirit of New Orleans with a love story that refuses to be boxed in.
The weekend began with a vibrant celebration at their home on Saturday, filled with laughter, music, and the energy of friends and family gathering to honor Tyra and Ken’s journey. The atmosphere was pure New Orleans: second line umbrellas, bold colors, and a sense of joy that spilled into the streets.
On Monday, Tyra and Ken made their union official in a way I’ve never witnessed a wedding ceremony at Chuck’s on the Avenue, a neighborhood liquor store, surrounded by the people who matter most. It was untraditional, heartfelt, and completely authentic to who they are as a couple. Their choice of venue and details made a clear statement: love doesn’t follow rules, and memories are made in the most unexpected places.
As a visual storyteller, it was an honor to capture every moment, from the home celebration to the liquor store ceremony. Tyra and Ken’s wedding was a true reflection of their personalities, bold, creative, and full of life. It’s a reminder that the best love stories are the ones that don’t look like anyone else’s.
Congratulations, Tyra and Ken, on a celebration that’s as unforgettable as your love.

We are Featured in 'Gestures of Refusal' at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. 🖼️
My Work Featured in 'Gestures of Refusal' at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans.
✨The New Year has rolled in with a wave of fresh starts and new chapters, but there’s one particular story I’m eager to share with you. It’s not every day you get to see your photos hanging on the walls of a place as esteemed as the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans and I am still riding the high of that reality.
Two of my photographs are currently on display in the 'Gestures of Refusal: Black Photography and Visual Culture' exhibit. One captures a moment of pure childhood wonder: A little girl, her eyes wide with amazement as she watches a butterfly. It's a little piece of magic, forever paused in time.
The other is an ode to lasting love. On their 50th anniversary, I photographed a couple whose laughter and easy comfort with each other tells you all you need to know about their journey together. It’s a powerful reminder that love can be as enduring as the souls who share it.
Shana M. Griffin, the curator, has created more than just an exhibition; she's pieced together a mosaic of Black life, culture, and love. It’s a visual celebration of the stories that Southern Black families have been telling for generations, now shared with anyone who walks through the gallery doors. Check Out https://www.seeingblack.org for more on Shana and the seeing black project.
Last night, Shana spoke about how a picture isn’t just something you see – it’s something you feel, hear, and remember. I couldn’t agree more. As I took in the works from other artists, I was struck by the symphony of stories each piece conveyed. And as much as I was there to observe, the art invited me to listen.
If you’re in New Orleans, I can’t recommend enough that you visit the Contemporary Arts Center at 900 Camp St. The 'Gestures of Refusal' exhibit is not just a collection of images; it’s a tapestry of experiences that deserve to be appreciated up close.
As a photographer, there’s no greater honor than sharing the stories that I see through my lens. This exhibit connects us all to a larger narrative, and I’m humbled to contribute to it. Here’s to a year of meaningful art and the stories it will continue to unfold.
